Florida hotels 'going green'
10 December 2007

A growing number of hotels and hospitality establishments in the US state of Florida are boosting their environmental credentials, according to reports.

Eight hotels in the popular Orlando area of Florida have recently been certified to be included in the state's Green Lodging programme.

This voluntary scheme endorses establishments' environmental credentials and sets conservation objectives for hotels, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

In order to be certified as a Florida Green Lodge, a hospitality provider must follow particular practices, such as the use of low-flow plumbing fixtures and the installation of programmable thermostats.

There are now a total of 59 certified hotels in the state, 27 of which are in central Florida, in locations ranging from Walt Disney World to Daytona Beach.

Meanwhile in the Florida tourism industry, Universal Orlando has begun groundwork for construction of its Wizarding World of Harry Potter attraction.

This theme park, which is set to open in two years' time, will include a recreation of the now famous Hogwarts school featured in the Harry Potter stories.
