South-east Asian sea route under consideration
10 December 2007
Consideration is being given to a new sea route that could expand the range of travel options available to people visiting south-east Asia.
A group of officials from Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand is surveying the possibilities for a sea tourist route that could be arranged to link the three countries.
The delegation, which included 162 representatives from the countries' travel administrations and agencies, set off from Rach Gia port in Vietnam's Kien Giang province on 10 December.
It will call at tourist sites in Kep, KoKong and Shihanoukville in Cambodia and the provinces of Trat and Chanthaburi in Thailand, among other locations, the Vietnam News Agency reports.
At each destination, representatives will work with local tourism authorities to assess the potential of the idea and map out how waterways could be used to ferry visitors to points within the south-east Asian region.
The sea route, which would be the first of its kind, could be operational by mid-February 2008.
