Cape Town heritage site to get facelift
13 December 2007

One of Cape Town's oldest and most famous heritage sites is set for a major renovation.

The multimillion rand facelift to be given to the South African city's Greenmarket Square will be the largest restoration the site has received during its 300-year existence.

Part of a 'rejuvenation drive' being carried out in the area, the overhaul will give Greenmarket Square a new concert stage and possibly a link to the area that will be used as the 'fan mile' for the World Cup in 2010.

The area will also be pedestrianised, making it more accessible for tourists.

Cape Town city councillor Simon Grindrod said: 'The square has played a significant role in the city's history since the first trading ships berthed in Table Bay in the late 17th century and used it as a trading area.

'The City now plans to resuscitate Greenmarket Square into the cultural, social and business hub of Cape Town which will also act as catalyst for inner-city revival.'

Greenmarket Square will turn 300 on 10 March 2010, making it the second oldest public square in South Africa.
