St Lucia among WTA winners
14 December 2007

The Caribbean island of St Lucia was among the winners at the 2007 World Travel Awards (WTA), taking the honour for the world's leading honeymoon destination.

Some 167,000 travel industry professionals voted for the awards, which were handed out at a ceremony on the Turks and Caicos islands on 12 December.

The St Lucia Tourist Board claims that the island has seen a year-on-year increase of 7.4% in visitors from the UK in 2007.

Northern areas in particular appear to have developed as important source markets for the Caribbean island, with more visitors coming from Lancashire (128%), Merseyside (71%) and Cheshire (35%).

Among the other winners at the WTA 2007 were British Airways, which was named the world's leading airline, and the Singapore Changi air hub, which took the world's leading airport accolade.

The Pyramids of Egypt were named the world's leading attraction, while London was victorious in the 'number one international destination' category.
