Passenger growth nears 5%
17 December 2007

Air passenger growth stood at 4.9% in October and appeared on track to hit 5% by the end of the year, the Association of European Airlines (AEA) has revealed.

Figures from the group, which counts British Airways, bmi, Air France and Lufthansa among its members, showed that cross-border European traffic remained strong in October, with growth of 7.5% in the month.

The North Atlantic market was "uncharacteristically buoyant", the AEA said, with a 5.9 per cent increase in passenger numbers.

In the Far East, growth slipped to 1.3% but appeared on target to reach 3% for the whole year.

The South Atlantic sector of the aviation industry also saw a slight dip in passenger numbers, but an increase of 7.3% still indicated that this area would see expansion 'well into double figures' by the end of the year.

Airlines appear to be improving the efficiency of their operations, with a record load factor of 78% reported in October, meaning that aircraft capacity is being used more effectively.
