Travellers 'prefer hotels to home at Xmas'
18 December 2007
Christmas is such a stressful time for many people that they would rather spend it in a comfortable hotel than with their families, according to new research.
A survey conducted among 1,500 members of online travel community TripAdvisor found that 75% of people would prefer to spend Christmas in a hotel rather than visit the homes of their relatives.
Over a third of the survey respondents said they plan to go travelling for the Christmas holidays this year.
The Caribbean emerged as the most popular getaway destination, with 39% of people saying they would like to spend the festive season there.
Michelle Perry, director of communications for TripAdvisor, said: 'The holidays are for spending time with family, but it appears many travellers want that quality time in moderation.'
The list of top five 'escape locations' in the survey included Hawaii, Paris, New York City and the Maldives.
Las Vegas, Tahiti and London also emerged as popular Christmas destinations, with Bora Bora and Thailand completing the top ten.
