Tourist files formal complaint against monkey
19 December 2007
A South Korean tourist has filed a formal complaint against a monkey which he claims stole his reading glasses.
The incident occurred while Kim Dang Hoon was visiting the Hindu holy city of Varanasi in northern India, the Associated Press reports.
Mr Kim said that the opportunistic monkey grabbed his glasses after he opened his hotel room window for some fresh air.
"He headed straight to the table where my glasses were kept and took it away," he said in a statement.
Mr Kim said that he was filing the complaint in order to make a claim for damages on his travel insurance after part of the frame of his glasses was later recovered by hotel staff.
Local police said the incident was being treated seriously.
Inspector Govind Singh announced: 'It is difficult to trace the monkey but I am trying my best to locate the rogue.'
Thousands of wild monkeys roam Varanasi and they often harass tourists. They are often left to do as they please, however, as they are seen as a manifestation of the Hindu monkey god Hanuman.
