Record numbers getting away this Xmas
20 December 2007
A record number of people are set to escape the British winter this year, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).
The travel association claims that 3.5m people will head overseas between 21 December and 2 January in search of either guaranteed sunshine or snow.
Warm weather appears to be the main motivation behind the exodus, with the Canary Islands, Egypt and Goa topping the list of preferred destinations.
Dubai has also been popular with people booking winter holidays, with its range of shopping opportunities and 'five-star luxury'.
Those in search of ideal winter sports conditions have reportedly been drawn to destinations such as France, Austria and Italy following early snow across Europe.
Justin Fleming, president of Abta, said: 'This is always a peak time for travel as people make the most of the bank holidays and once again there are a record number travelling.'
Airport operator BAA has estimated that 2.7m people will leave Britain through its hubs, with 1.2m jetting off from Heathrow, 600,000 departing from Gatwick and 360,000 flying from Stansted.
