Airlines welcome US congestion plans
20 December 2007

Major American airlines have welcomed government plans to take action to cut congestion at airports in the state of New York.

US transportation secretary Mary Peters announced that measures must be implemented to relieve congestion in the New York area, including caps on the number of flights coming into airports such as Newark and JFK.

Ms Peters also advised that airlines shift services to times when airports have spare capacity, which could allow for 50 more flights per day than last summer.

Doug Parker, chief executive of US Airways, said: "As the largest carrier at New York's LaGuardia airport, with a hub at Philadelphia and extensive presence in the north-east, we are very supportive of Secretary Peters' initiatives and the general recommendations made today."

He added: "The secretary's recommendations today will benefit consumers throughout the north-east, the US and global transportation systems."

Continental Airlines also welcomed the new measures, saying that the represent a 'positive step' in the effort to improve operations at commercial airports in the New York and New Jersey area.
