Boeing marks 50th anniversary of 707
21 December 2007

Aircraft manufacturer Boeing has celebrated the 50th anniversary of its 707 jetliner.

The company claims that the first flight of its 707 was the point in commercial aviation history that marked the transition from propellers to jet propulsion.

December 20th 1957 was the date of the Boeing 707 jetliner's maiden flight, which lasted 71 minutes.

The introduction of the jet plane was a risky move for the manufacturer, with Boeing president William Allen reportedly 'betting the company' on the prediction that the future of commercial aviation was in jets.

Pan Am World Airways was the first customer to purchase the 707, with 20 of the aircraft changing hands in October 1955.

In a more recent development in Boeing's business, Australian flag-carrying airline Qantas ordered 31 737-800 jetliners.

Geoff Dixon, chief executive of the carrier, said that the new 737s would be equipped with the latest in-flight entertainment technology.
