'Business as usual' at Birmingham this winter
21 December 2007

Birmingham international airport (BIA) passengers have been reassured that it will be 'business as usual' at the hub this winter, in contrast to other airports that are threatened by potential strike action.

Trade union Unite announced today that its members working at airports operated by BAA will be taking industrial action in January.

The move could cause travel disruption to thousands of passengers, with Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted all potentially affected.

However, a spokesperson for BIA stressed that there will be some airports in the UK still operating as normal.

'If you were to listen to some of the London-centric news reports, you'd be excused for thinking that air travel could be at a standstill across the country. This is plainly nonsense,' said John Morris, the airport's head of corporate affairs.

'The standard of reporting this morning may have caused distress and confusion to those enlightened people who always choose to avoid the hassle of London. Birmingham international airport will operate normally, as I am sure will our friends at Manchester.'

Birmingham and Manchester are the UK's largest airports outside London.
