02 January 2008
The South African city of Johannesburg will host a unique art fair in March, the local council has confirmed.
Between 13 and 16 March the Joburg Art Fair will take place at the Sandton Convention Centre and will put some of Africa's most sought-after contemporary art on sale for the first time.
The event is expected to attract widespread interest from collectors and new buyers alike.
A number of international galleries have signed up to take part in the exhibition, including the Jack Shainman Gallery from New York and London's October Gallery.
The showcase will consist of installations, paintings, photography, videos and sculpture by African artists and will cover 5,000 square metres of the Sandton centre in Johannesburg.
Local people will be given an opportunity to interact with the work of African artists, who are already widely celebrated and collected around the world.
Tickets for the exhibition, costing 100 rand (£7.40), will be available on the door.
