Air passenger demand rockets in November
07 January 2008
Demand for air travel rose at an annual rate of 9.3% in November 2007, according to figures released by the International Air Transport Association (Iata).
This is up from the 7.7% growth recorded in October and is the fastest rate of increase in demand in the past 18 months.
Most regions saw strong increases in demand for air travel, with an 8.8% rise in the Asia-Pacific and 7.6% growth in both North America and Europe.
In the Middle East, passenger demand climbed at a year-on-year rate of 18.3% in November, continuing four years of double-digit growth.
Giovanni Bisignani, director general of Iata, predicted that this positive activity might not continue throughout 2008, with demand growth expected to fall to 5%.
He said that airlines had made impressive efficiency gains since 2001 and set carriers the challenge of continuing this trend in the coming year.
