Virgin 'to run near-normal service during strike'

Virgin Atlantic is hoping to operate at close to normal levels during the period of planned strike action by its cabin crew.
The airline said that hundreds of its employees had volunteered to work during the forthcoming periods of industrial action.
Volunteers have been contacting Virgin Atlantic to offer their assistance and ensure that the airline operates nine out of ten flights during the strike period, the company claimed.
Lyell Strambi, the carrier's chief operating officer, said that an industry-leading pay offer had been made to cabin crew workers, but some employees believed that they could attain a better deal through taking strike action, against the advice of their union.
Now, the offer has been withdrawn and employees must return to work if they want to see any form of pay rise, Mr Strambi said.
'Virgin Atlantic is committed to resolving this dispute but the only way our cabin crew are going to see any form of pay increase in future is by joining the hundreds of volunteers coming in to work on the planned strike days and ensuring that our customers get to their destinations,' he explained.
