Barcelona prepares to host fitness fanatics

The Catalonian city of Barcelona will see an influx of endurance runners and fitness fanatics in March as it holds its annual marathon.
This event, which has been held since 1977 and steadily grown in popularity every year, regularly attracts tens of thousands of entrants.
As well as presenting an opportunity for some rigorous physical exercise, the marathon also allows participants to see the entirety of the city of Barcelona.
The course begins at the busy Placa de Espanya, on the Avinguda Maria Cristina, below the steep hillside of Montjuic.
Runners head towards the north of the city and the Camp Nou stadium, home of the world famous Barcelona FC, before progressing along the Avinguda Diagonal and Gran Via de Catalunya towards the heart of the city.
The route will wind past such famous landmarks as the Sagrada Familia and La Pedrera before heading to the seafront and Las Ramblas, eventually coming to an end at the Placa de Espanya.
