The Philippines saw a record 3.09m tourist arrivals in 2007, 8.7% up on the previous year, according to new figures.

Data released by the tourism department shows that spending by foreign visitors increased by 41% last year, to reach $4.89bn (£2.5bn).

South Koreans made up the largest portion of the market, accounting for 653,310 arrivals, followed by Americans (578,953) and the Japanese (395,012).

The Philippines tourism department said that it is encouraging local companies to organise more events and promotions to attract even more visitors and tempt travellers to stay for longer in 2008.

Joseph Durano, tourism secretary, set a target of 3.3m foreign visitors this year and anticipated spending of $5.8bn.

The Philippines is an island nation in south-east Asia that comprises more than 7,000 separate bodies of land.
