Travellers 'using regional hubs for convenience'
14 January 2008

Many travellers are catching flights from regional air hubs for a quick and convenient travel experience, according to an airport spokeswoman.

A representative for Bournemouth airport said that many central hubs are suffering from congestion problems owing to the ever-increasing demand for flights.

The spokeswoman said that airports such as Bournemouth and Nottingham East Midlands, the latter of which is used by bmi, have enjoyed rising passenger figures in recent years and anticipate further growth in the future.

'Certainly at Bournemouth and East Midlands we've seen an increase in passenger figures over the past year or so and our forecasts will obviously continue to grow,' she said.

'[Bigger] airports are getting quite congested – Heathrow has certainly been very open and said that they're over their capacity.'

Capacity at Heathrow airport will be boosted when it opens its fifth terminal on 27 March this year, which will allow 30m passengers a year to move out of the hub's existing facilities.
