Orlando Bloom visits Nepal
14 January 2008

Movie star Orlando Bloom showed that he was comfortable in more than his usual Hollywood locale as he visited the Asian nation of Nepal.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star visited the western province of Kaski, one of the country's poorest areas, in his role as a UN ambassador.

He was given a warm reception in the country, with locals placing a red 'tikka' mark on his forehead – a traditional sign of welcome – and draping a garland of flowers around his neck.

Bloom then appeared right at home as he played with local children and chatted to their mothers.

A Unicef spokesperson was quoted by Hello! magazine as saying: 'Another Hollywood movie star might feel strange in a remote and (poor) area, but he seemed perfectly at ease.'

Nepal is a landlocked nation in south Asia, sharing borders with Tibet and India.

It is home to eight of the world's ten tallest mountains, including Mount Everest, making it a popular destination with adventure travellers and mountaineers.
