Britons 'need to value passports more'
16 January 2008

British travellers have been urged to value the importance of their passport and consider the potential problems that losing the document could cause.

According to figures from insurance provider Essential Travel, the number of passports lost in the UK increased from 62,364 in 1999 to 290,996 in 2006.

The company said that many UK travellers are guilty of 'persistently undervaluing' their passports and said that the worth of the document is far more than the £72 cost of replacing it.

Most passports go missing while the holder is abroad, potentially causing travel delays, unnecessary costs and massive stress.

However, Stuart Bensusan of Essential Travel said that there are methods of protecting oneself against the full effect of losing a passport.

'Any passport holder should note down the number and issue date of their passport and keep those details in a safe place,' Mr Bensusan advised.

'They should also take two copies of the page in the passport that carries their photo, leaving one lodged safely with a friend or family member, and one packed for travel in a separate place from the passport itself.'
