Terminal 5 unveiled at Heathrow
17 January 2008
British Airways has offered the first look at Terminal Five, the facility that it will begin using at Heathrow airport this year.
The terminal is equipped with the latest technology, a first-class lounge, a cinema and a five-storey-high wall of windows.
There are also 112 stores and restaurants and a view of Windsor Castle from Terminal Five, which came at a cost of more than £4bn.
British Airways will be the only airline to use the facility, with the first flight taking off on 27 March.
Robert Boyle, the airline's commercial director, said the move to the new terminal was important as congestion and inefficiency at Heathrow was giving travellers a negative impression of British Airways.
'Each year, surveys of frequent flyers around the world praise BA and criticise Heathrow for its delays, poor baggage handling and crowded terminals,' he claimed.
Terminal Five is expected to speed up the travel experience by using new equipment such as X-ray machines that do not require passengers to remove their shoes and belts.
