22 January 2008
Chile has been awarded the Guinness World Record for the largest swimming pool on the planet.
The gigantic lagoon is located in the resort of San Alfonso del Mar in Algarrobo city, on the southern coast of Chile.
It measures 1,013 metres in length, covers an area of eight hectares and contains 250,000 cubic metres of water.
While there is plenty of room to swim in the pool, visitors are can also cruise across the lagoon on small boats.
Construction of the site cost an estimated $1.5bn (£768m) and the water inside the pool, which is drawn from the Pacific Ocean, is kept at 26 degrees Celsius, around nine degrees warmer than Chile's surrounding waters.
The San Alfonso del Mar resort is located some 100km west of the Chilean capital of Santiago.
