Liverpool JLA installs wind turbines
23 January 2008
Liverpool John Lennon airport (JLA) has installed two wind turbines on its site and claimed to be the first commercial air hub in the UK to undertake such a scheme.
The airport said that the project is part of its plans to explore the ways in which it can minimise its environmental impact.
Two 15-metre-high, six-kilowatt turbines have been installed, both of which can generate enough electricity to power a standard four- to six-bedroom house.
The structures are located on either side of the hub's main approach road, in order to provide a "dramatic gateway" that is clearly visible to all airport users.
Andrew Dutton, environment manager at JLA, said: 'The airport will continually look at ways to minimise the environmental impact of operating a growing regional airport.
'The wind turbines will potentially, along with other renewable energy sources, play an important part in the airport's future development.'
Flights are available from Liverpool airport to destinations including Rome, Paris, Tenerife, Berlin and Bucharest.
