Water sports could give welcome boost to Kenya tourism
25 January 2008
The Kenya tourism industry could be given a welcome boost by the development of a new water sports facility, according to reports.
Kenya's Tourism Trust Fund (TTF) has allocated an accommodation site at Masinga Dam to support the development of water sports tourism.
Renovation of the Masinga Dam resort and development of the area is expected to cost some 43m shillings (£312,000) and eventually accommodate 200 people, The Nation reports.
Kenya has suffered damage to its reputation as an African tourism hotspot recently following the unrest that occurred after a recent presidential election.
Dan Kagagi, chief executive of the TTF, said: 'We know Kenya's tourism faces a long road to recovery, but by developing and marketing areas for sports tourism we can help assist in the sector's recovery.'
The facility is expected to be used by professional water sports athletes but also be marketable to leisure travellers.
