Cape Town to get ball rolling on year of celebrations
28 January 2008
The South African city of Cape Town will this month begin a year of celebrations that will reach its apex in July.
Former South African president Nelson Mandela will celebrate his 90th birthday on 18 July this year, which will be marked by parties and festivals throughout the country.
Cape Town will begin the festivities early with the Suidoosterfees, a popular cultural event that will be dedicated to Mr Mandela this year.
Now in its fifth year, the Suidoosterfees will be held between 28 January and 9 February, with a special focus over the weekend of 1 to 3 February.
The festival will feature a range of events, including performances by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and Ballet Theatre Afrikan and a photography exhibition.
Mayor Helen Zille said: 'The City of Cape Town is proud to be a partner in the Suidoosterfees, which provides thousands of residents and visitors with a wonderful opportunity to savour and celebrate the Cape's unique brand of art and culture.
'It also unites communities across the Cape metropole and helps boost Cape Town's reputation as the cultural capital of South Africa.'
