Woman gets first passport at 109
29 January 2008

A Macedonian woman is receiving her first passport at the grand age of 109.

Maria Kostova has been unable to get a passport for many years as authorities could not check how old she was.

Ms Kostova was born in the town of Shtip in Macedonia in 1898 but was not issued with a birth certificate, Ananova reports.

When she requested a passport more than 20 years ago, the passport office said that it would have to track down the records of her birth, which were lost by local authorities in 1898.

The passport office only recently got in touch with Ms Kostova, saying that they had located archive documents dating back to the 19th century that could confirm her date of birth.

Ms Kostova said: 'It's a nice surprise. Now I just have to think of what holiday I can have so I can use it.'

The passport will be presented to Ms Kostova as a 110th birthday present.
