'Massive' airport development in Africa, Middle East, Asia
06 February 2008
Airport development in the Middle East, African and south Asian regions is continuing at pace, with projects now worth some $68bn (£34.6bn), according to reports.
Countries in the Gulf region account for a large portion of this amount ($43bn), with $21bn worth of development taking place in Dubai alone.
This year, the emirate is set to host the world's largest airport industry exhibition, Travel Daily News reports.
Dubai's $10bn Al Maktoum international airport is currently under development at Jebel Ali and, with a projected 120m annual passengers, is set to become the largest air hub in the world.
Substantial development is also taking place in Jordan and Iraq, as well as the Asian nations of India and Sri Lanka and the African continent.
One of the most notable investment plans is being pursued in Libya, where some $3.5bn is being spent on Tripoli international airport, plus five other hubs.
In South Africa, $725m is being invested in the development of Tambo and Johannesburg international airports.
