BA pilots threaten strike action
11 February 2008

The British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA) is considering strike action over the Easter break.

BA pilots are concerned about plans that would see a subsidiary airline - OpenSkies - established to operate services between the US and Europe.

Commenting on the situation, Jim McAuslan - the association's general secretary - said that pilots on this service will receive a lower salary and in this way would be a 'Trojan horse' used to 'beat down the pay and conditions' of existing pilots.

The result of the ballot is expected on 20 February. If strike action is decided on, the industrial action would legally be able to commence from the 29 February.

Responding to the threat of strikes, a spokesman for BA told the Daily Mail: 'We have guaranteed to BA pilots that the creation of OpenSkies will not in any way affect their current terms and conditions.

'It is simply not true that the new subsidiary will be used to beat down BA pilots' pay and conditions or threaten their jobs.'
