Gatwick relaxes baggage rules
11 February 2008
Gatwick Airport has reduced the number of restrictions operating on its baggage services.
Although dependent on permission from airlines, passengers will now be able to carry more than one item of hand luggage when passing through its north terminal. Those using the south terminal have been able to carry more than one piece of hand luggage since 7 January.
This change follows the Department for Transport's deadline - 31 May 2008 - for allowing air passengers to travel with more than one bag.
However, Gatwick, which is owned and operated by the British Airports Authority, did state that the 'one bag rule' will function on other flights.
The airport also adds that the rule 'will be relaxed in the near future when the ongoing construction project to upgrade and expand the security facilities at the airport is completed'.
Gatwick released figures earlier this month that showed the airport catered for 2.5 million passengers during the course of December 2007. Its managing director Andy Flowers added that the hub will have seen 35 million passengers over the course of the year.
