14 February 2008

Operators belonging to the Association of European Airlines (AEA) carried some 358m passengers in 2007, the organisation has revealed.

The association's members, which include British Airways, bmi, Air France and Iberia, achieved a 4.1% increase in traffic last year, from 344m passengers in 2006.

Regions all over the world saw increases in activity from AEA carriers, including the Far East (3.1%) and the North Atlantic (4.4%).

Trans-border European traffic remained buoyant throughout the year, with an overall increase of 7%.

One carrier included in the AEA, British Airways, recently announced that it will boost its activity further next year with double-daily business-class flights from London City airport to New York.

Willie Walsh, chief executive of the airline, said: 'This niche service will fly passengers between the heart of the two largest financial centres in the world.'
