Qantas welcomes open skies over Pacific
15 February 2008

A new agreement has been reached liberalising airspace between Australia and the US and has been welcomed by Qantas.

Geoff Dixon, chief executive officer of Qantas, said that the carrier had supported the Australian government's efforts to open up air networks to the US, an aim which has largely been achieved.

The new arrangement was finalised following talks between the two countries in Washington this week.

'We welcome the outcome,' Mr Dixon said. 'It brings new opportunities for growth and competition.

'Importantly, it will assist the further development of Australia's aviation industry, as well as help increase trade and tourism with a major economic partner.'

Qantas currently offers 48 services per week on the Pacific network – its highest ever frequency – and this will increase to 51 flights a week from March.

Mr Dixon urged the Australian government to consider liberalising airspace arrangements with other countries, which would enable carriers to develop their operations and compete with foreign airlines.
