Airbus, South Africa to cooperate on eco research
18 February 2008

Plane manufacturer Airbus and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) have agreed on a partnership to research new aviation technology.

The two organisations will look into new flight technologies in a one-year agreement worth approximately 1.5m rand (£100,600), SouthAfrica.info reports.

According to the CSIR, the research could contribute to the development of the clean and efficient jetliners of the future.

Axel Krein, Airbus' senior vice-president of research and technology, said: 'Computational mechanics is an extremely exciting field where the sky is no longer the limit, but the next frontier.

'The CSIR believes it has a valuable contribution to make in furthering understanding and developing solutions in this science.'

Mr Krein claimed that the development of scientific knowledge was the only way to manage worldwide air transport growth and minimise its impact on the environment.

The project will form part of Airbus' research and technology partnership with South Africa, which began in 2006.
