Dubai international picks up awards
25 February 2008
Dubai International airport has recently scooped three awards at ceremonies across the world.
The United Arab Emirates hub was named the best airport in the Middle East at the Business Traveller Awards in Germany, Gulf News reports.
It completed its hat-trick of triumphs at the Naseba Middle East and North Africa Airports Awards in Doha, where it was recognised as having the best duty-free offering and being the fastest growing airport.
Last year, some 34.34m people passed through Dubai International, 19.3% more than the previous year, which represents the highest growth rate for any international airport in 2007.
Duty-free sales at the airport had a total value of 3.18bn dirhams (£441m) last year, 24% more than in 2006.
Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, president of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and chairman of the Emirates group, said: 'Dubai International airport has long been recognised as a premier airport in the Middle East and is fast emerging as a global hub, thanks to Dubai's achievements in tourism, trade, aviation and logistics sectors.'
Sheikh Ahmed said that infrastructure improvements over the coming years will give Dubai airport 'unparalleled capacity'.
