Denmark to open new national park
26 February 2008

Denmark has announced that it is to boost its environmental credentials this year with the opening of a new national park.

The new nature area, which is the first of five, will be located at Thy on the West Jutland coast.

Denmark's government has also given approval for four parks to be opened in 2008 and 2009, in locations including Mols Bjerge, Skjern A and the Wadden Sea.

Thy National Park will cover an area of 24.3 hectares, stretching from Hanstholm to Agger Tange.

According to the Danish national tourist office, the area is a 'paradise' for bird and nature watchers, featuring coastline, dunes, sand heaths and lakes.

Visitors will be encouraged to get involved with the natural approach of the park by exploring the area on foot, bicycle or horseback, with trails available for hikes and forest walks.

According to VisitDenmark, environmental awareness is a 'way of life' in Denmark, which boasts almost 200 EU Blue Flag beaches along 5,000 miles of coastline.
