AUA jets to become flying voting booths
27 February 2008
Austrian Airlines (AUA) is to offer a service not ordinarily associated with air carriers over the coming weeks as its planes turn into flying voting booths.
The operator announced that its passengers will be able to place their votes in-flight for Austria's regional elections next month.
A statement released by AUA said that passengers on all of its services Austrian, Austrian Arrows and Lauda Air will be able to lodge their votes before election day on 9 March, AFP reports.
In-flight voting will be enabled as a result of special adaptation of current postal vote rules, AUA said.
While passengers will be responsible for their own privacy, owing to the absence of booths on board aircraft, the carrier's statement said: 'Austrian Airlines will be pleased to make the galley or empty rows of seats available.'
Submitted electoral cards will be collected by the airline's personnel and forwarded to local authorities.
