New bird reserve opens to visitors
28 February 2008

A new bird reserve is now open to visitors in Colombia, according to reports.

The area was designated in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range in the north of the country.

Groups including the American Bird Conservancy and Conservation International opened the new reserve and said that its location was ecologically significant, the Associated Press reports.

The area of northern Colombia in which the reserve is based is home to 21 types of bird that are found nowhere else, such as the Santa Marta parakeet, as well as migratory songbirds from the US.

It is therefore considered a critical location for the conservation of birds, as well as certain species of amphibian.

The reserve is set to prove appealing to environmentally conscious travellers, as it boasts eco-tourism facilities including the 'self-sustaining' Blue Moon restaurant.
