World's largest mangrove forest 'could open up to tourists'
05 March 2008
Tourists are expected to flock to India after plans to turn the world's largest mangrove forest into a destination fit for travellers.
Proposals have been made to develop the Sundarbans area in west Bengal into a location which can be enjoyed by foreign visitors with better facilities set to be built there.
Already a UNESCO as a world heritage site, the area attracts some of the world's most weird and wonderful creatures and tourism chiefs have been warned that any development must not disturb local wildlife.
Animals which currently call the costal area home include the Bengal tiger, the estuarine crocodile, a large number of snakes and hundreds of different species of birds.
Last year, the United Nations World Tourism Organisation looked into the possibility of developing the delta, the PTI news agency quotes the region's Tourism Department's chief Bijoy Chatterjee as saying.
'We have to showcase the potential, before the tourists, to draw global attention to this UNESCO world heritage site,' he said.
