Southampton wins energy-saving award
06 March 2008

Southampton airport has received an award for its work in developing new and innovative methods of saving energy.

The accolade was presented to the south coast hub after it installed new lighting systems around the base, which led to reductions in energy use, carbon emissions and costs.

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are used in the system, which require a lower voltage and are predicted to reduce CO2 emissions that result from powering lights by around 75% compared to conventional methods.

The award was voted on by engineering specialists with airport operator BAA. Southampton's lighting system competed with a number of other energy-saving initiatives that have been launched across the company.

BAA's south coast hub has also received an award for innovation from Business Southampton for its solar-powered roundabout, which uses LEDs to provide street lighting.

Paul Burcombe, head of engineering at the airport, said: 'Energy conservation is a real focus for us at Southampton airport. I am so proud to work with this team and to win accolades for projects we've pioneered.'

A number of connections are available from Southampton airport, including flights to Paris with Air France.
