Prices cut at Chinese tourist spots
07 March 2008

Prices have been slashed at tourist spots in southern China after the region was hit by snowstorms in January and February.

The blizzards represented the worst bout of weather in 50 years, according to state news agency Xinhua.

A number of scenic locations have lowered their prices after receiving no visitors for 20 consecutive days, in a low period that cost the country an estimated 6.97bn yuan (£486.6m) in tourism revenue.

One of the locations that has changed its policies to attract more visitors is Zhangjiajie in Hunan province, a Unesco world heritage site, which is famous for its caves.

Jinggangshan, a location known as the cradle of China's revolution, has been offering a 20% discount off its entrance fee, while Huangshan, or Yellow Mountain, also reduced its price in February.

Hu Liming, vice-director of the Huangshan Management Committee, said: 'The price cut has worked. Most tourists who came shortly after the disaster are from neighbouring cities. Through them, more people know we are ready.'
