Britain 'has a great quantity of high quality attractions'
10 March 2008
A British travel industry spokesperson has stressed the value and appeal of the domestic tourism market.
According to Robin Broke, director of the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (Alva), many people do not give the British travel industry the attention it deserves.
'We have the greatest quantity of high quality attractions of any country in the world, but because they're on our doorstep we tend to take them for granted,' he said.
'We've got Liverpool European Capital of Culture so people might decide to stay and have a look at that.'
Mr Broke also referred to the credit crunch as a factor in the travel industry, saying that people who have borrowed a lot of money in recent years may not want to stretch themselves further by taking a foreign holiday.
The pound is currently fairly weak against the euro, the Alva director pointed out, but strong against the dollar, a fact that could play a part in people's holiday decisions.
