Observation wheel to open in New Jersey
11 March 2008

The first ever observation wheel in the United States is set to open in New Jersey, just outside New York, this year.

UK-based Merlin Entertainments, the company behind Legoland and Madame Tussauds, announced that it would lease and operate the observation wheel, which will open in November and be called the Pepsi Globe.

The 87-metre-tall wheel will be based in the Meadowlands Xanadu entertainment and retail complex in northern New Jersey., where it will offer panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline.

It will be one of five new attractions being opened in the US by Merlin Entertainments in the next two years, including its second US Legoland Discovery Centre, which will also be located in the Meadowlands Xanadu centre.

The company also operates the London Eye, a fact that it claimed made it 'uniquely qualified' to ensure that the Pepsi Globe is a success.

Larry Siegel, president of the Meadowlands Xanadu development, said the company was 'thrilled' to be working with Merlin and revealed that the complex expects to welcome 50m visitors every year.

Nick Varney, chief executive of Merlin, said that the company's attractions will play a 'key role' in making Meadowlands Xanadu a success.
