BCC supports Stansted expansion
11 March 2008
The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has voiced its support for plans for development at Stansted airport.
Speaking as airport operator BAA made its formal application to build a second runway at Stansted, BCC director general David Frost said growth at Stansted was particularly important considering the current economic situation in the UK.
With the country facing a slowdown, it 'could not be more crucial' that Stansted is allowed to expand, Mr Frost claimed.
He added: 'We cannot simply shut up shop and allow our European competitors to benefit.
'It is critical that major infrastructure projects like Stansted are delivered swiftly and this specific development highlights the need for the government's independent planning commission to be established as soon as possible.'
Plans for a new runway at Stansted are likely to attract opposition from environmental campaigners, as has been seen recently following proposals to build a new landing strip at Heathrow.
Stansted is the third busiest airport in the UK and hosts flights from carriers including Air Malta, American Airlines and Cyprus Airways.
