London 'a leader of world culture'
12 March 2008
London is a world leader in the provision of culture and entertainment to its citizens and visitors, according to a new report.
A 'cultural audit' commissioned by the London Development Agency (LDA) found that the capital is ahead of four other major world cities, New York, Paris, Tokyo and Shanghai, with more museums, galleries, theatres, concert halls and cinemas.
The report was followed by an announcement from London mayor Ken Livingstone of a £1.4m funding package for the development of new cultural projects across the city.
'In the four years between now and London 2012 the eyes of the world will be on the capital city, providing a unique opportunity to show off the rich creative and cultural talents that flourish in London,' Mr Livingstone said.
'We are working to ensure that those organisations in the creative sector are given all the help they can to achieve this.'
Kevin Spacey, artistic director of the Old Vic theatre, described London as a 'remarkable city' and said that the 2012 Olympic Games will provide an opportunity 'not just for sport, but also for culture'.
The LDA report found that London has 184 museums, compared to 157 in Paris and 91 in New York, and 55 major theatres, nearly three times the number found in Shanghai.
