Two-thirds of travellers 'planning a trip in Europe'
13 March 2008

Europe is set to prove as popular as ever with international travellers this year, with 65% planning a trip to or within the continent, according to research.

A survey by online community TripAdvisor of more than 1,400 travellers worldwide also found that half of US respondents plan to visit Europe in 2008, despite the current weakness of the dollar against the euro and pound.

Just under a third of people said they plan to visit in September and another 30% said they hope to save money on their holiday by travelling off-peak.

The study revealed a number of beliefs about European cities, with Prague named the best for bargains and Dublin the friendliest.

Paris is considered the best location for food and shopping, while London reportedly boasts the best nightlife and public parks.

It was not all good news for these famous capitals, however, as Paris was named the least friendly city and London the most expensive.

TripAdvisor director of communications Michele Perry said: 'Americans are still drawn to Europe, despite unfavourable exchange rates and economic concerns.

'Although the best bargain European city may be Prague, according to the survey, the most popular European city to visit this year is also considered the most expensive - London.'
