Terminal 5 to be opened by the Queen
14 March 2008

Terminal 5, the new, state-of-the-art passenger facility at Heathrow airport, will be officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen today.

Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh will be met at Heathrow by Sir Nigel Rudd, chairman of airport operator BAA, as well as transport secretary Ruth Kelly, British Airways chairman Martin Broughton and hundreds of airport and construction workers.

Prior to inaugurating the terminal, the Queen and another 800 invited guests will be entertained by a choir of 30 people led by award-winning composer and musician Steve Sidwell.

Sir Nigel will make a speech at the ceremony outlining the importance of Terminal 5 before the facility is officially opened.

The development came at a cost of £4.3bn and the new terminal is set to handle some 30m passengers every year.

Willie Walsh, British Airways chief executive, said: 'Terminal 5 is a fantastic facility and our customers will really enjoy the space, comfort and convenience it offers.

'We have exclusive use of the terminal and that will allow us to greatly improve the levels of service we can offer.'
