New wildlife reserve opens in Uganda
18 March 2008
Uganda will soon boast a new tourist attraction in the Budongo forest reserve.
The area is expected to become a top eco-tourism spot following the provision of tourists' accommodation and opportunities for chimpanzee-viewing tours at a new centre, local newspaper New Vision reports.
Kaniyo-Pabidi, a complex in the northern part of the forest that will offer chimp tracking and birdwatching as its main tourist activities, was opened by Uganda's environment minister, Jessica Eriyo, on 14 March.
Ms Eriyo said: 'The government has full commitment towards conserving natural forests and their biodiversity to improve the prospects for tourism.'
As well as offering accommodation to visitors to Budongo, which is the largest forest reserve in Uganda, Kaniyo-Pabidi will include an information centre with a reception and a restaurant.
The complex is set to boost the African nation's tourism industry and also support conservation projects related to chimpanzees, which are an endangered species.
Baguma Isoke, chairman of the National Forestry Authority (NFA), said: 'With these better and expanded facilities, NFA will generate more revenue from eco-tourism services to strengthen conservation efforts.'
