Weak dollar 'has boosted US shopping holidays'
18 March 2008

Shopping holidays in the US have been made more popular as a result of the weak dollar, according to a travel industry expert.

The dollar has recently been trading at a historically low level against the pound and the euro as the United States goes through a variety of economic difficulties.

Frances Tuke of the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) said that the weakness of the dollar at present means that it is now 'the time to go' to America.

'We've seen it quite low for a while now so we've seen some good figures to the US,' she added.

'You've got to be careful about your tax limit, but otherwise it's a good place to go shopping. Any other countries that take the dollar will also be good places to go.'

With regards to the tax limit, Ms Tuke said that people often forget that they cannot go to America and simply buy as much as they want – there is a limit on purchases that all visitors must be aware of.

The United States is not the only popular destination for shopping, the Abta spokeswoman claimed, as places such as Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong are popular with people looking for electrical goods.
