Kansas unveils its '8 wonders'
18 March 2008
The US state of Kansas has set out to lure visitors by revealing its eight natural and man-made wonders.
More than 24,000 people from all 50 states in America voted on what they thought were Kansas' most important features and the state's aptly named Big Well took the top spot.
The well was constructed in 1887 and was something of a feat of engineering in its time. It is currently the world's largest hand-dug well.
Kansas' Wetlands Complex, which comprises the Cheyenne Bottoms and the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, took second place, followed by the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum.
The state's Cosmosphere and Space Centre, which has one of the most significant collections of US and Russian space artefacts in the world, rounded off the top five.
Voters named the Kansas Underground Salt Museum the state's sixth wonder, followed by the Monument Rocks and Castle Rock chalk beds and the St Fidelis Church.
Marci Penner, director of the Kansas Sampler Foundation, which organised the project, said: 'It's very exciting to announce what the public chose as our very best in terms of places totally unique to Kansas or sites that are iconic.
'We'd love it if the fun of the contest would launch a wave of exploring Kansas.'
