2m Brits 'to jet off for Easter'
20 March 2008
The forthcoming Easter holiday, which falls particularly early in 2008, is expected to see some 2m British people taking a foreign trip.
Spain, and Tenerife in particular, is set to be the outright favourite for holidays this weekend, while Egypt, Morocco and Florida have also been popular, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).
The fact that the skiing season is still running means that there has been strong interest in destinations such as France, Austria, Canada and Finland.
Considering the relative shortness of the Easter holiday, city breaks are also set to prove popular, with Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Rome and Venice topping the list of desirable locations.
Some 450,000 people are set to embark on their journeys from Heathrow this weekend, making it the busiest airport in the UK, followed by Gatwick (260,000) and Stansted (170,000).
Abta president Justin Fleming said: 'The early Easter has given our customers the extra option of heading to the slopes as well as topping up their tans, and the extended peak period has also seen a flattening out of prices, which has increased the number of holiday bargains for this time of year.'
