Stonehenge replica to be built in Australia
25 March 2008
A replica of Stonehenge is set to be built in Australia to attract tourists, according to reports.
Ross Smith, the former owner of a successful microbrewery business, plans to create the new attraction in the Margaret River region of western Australia.
The monument, which will be called simply The Henge, will include 101 granite stones and a central altar and is set to open in time for the 21 December solstice, the Associated Press reports.
Mr Smith said: 'I'm doing it because I can. Nowhere in the world has a complete Stonehenge been built.'
The entrepreneur also said that The Henge will be a business venture, with a fee for entry and the opportunity to hire the location for weddings and parties.
Australia's Margaret River region, which is already known for its wines, chocolate and cheese, could see up to 300,000 more tourists every year as a result of the new attraction, according to Mr Smith.
Unlike the original Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England, the replica will invite visitors to touch and explore the features of the area and also include an interpretive centre and a children's playground.
