Myanmar zoo targeted at tourists
26 March 2008

A new zoo has been opened in the south-east Asian country of Myanmar, which local authorities hope will boost the tourism industry.

The attraction was opened in the remote administrative capital of Naypyitaw and houses a number of animals that were transferred from Myanmar's other zoos in Yangon and Mandalay, the Associated Press reports.

Some 400 animals will be homed at the zoo, including elephants, monkeys, birds, rhinos and tigers, as well as white lions that were given as a gift by neighbouring China.

As well as being a tourist attraction, the animal park was constructed to provide some entertainment for civil servants who are required to live in Naypyitaw for their work.

Government official Lt Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo said: 'The zoo could be a recreational place not only for locals but also for foreign tourists.'

Among the features of the zoo is a penguin ice house that was built at a cost of more than £100,000.

There have been some concerns expressed, however, that some of the park's animals may not be able to access the vegetation they need to stay healthy.
